Intelligent construction site system for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension

The project involves the safety and communication system for the construction site of the underground eastern section of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension – a 9.2 km-long extension with seven stations, forming part of the future Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit line in Toronto.

The € 175 million (CAD 255 million) project will establish a continuous rapid transit line extending from Toronto’s eastern end, through the city center and into the neighboring municipality of Mississauga in the west. The centerpiece of the extension is a 500-meter-long tunnel.

To protect personnel, improve coordination on the construction site and ensure fail-safe communication, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions has installed an intelligent construction site system throughout the entire project area.

Components and features of the overall system

  • Central control system (NMS - Network Management System)
  • Personnel tracking throughout the entire construction site area (both above and underground)
  • Communication system for the construction team based on Wi-Fi
  • Emergency call phone
  • Alarm system
  • Video surveillance and storage (both above and underground)
  • Wi-Fi coverage throughout the entire construction site area

A key focus of this project was the strict adherence to Canadian regulations for protecting personnel in potentially explosive environments. To meet these requirements, explosion-proof distribution enclosures and specially certified components – such as access points, radios and emergency telephones – were used to ensure the highest level of safety for all workers.
