Intelligent construction site system for the extension of the U2

STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions was commissioned to deliver the safety and communication system for the major construction site of Vienna's U2 subway line. The project section extends from Matzleinsdorferplatz to Neubaugasse.

After an approximately one-year development phase and intensive negotiations, SISS was able to secure its first project in the newly established business area "Health & Safety Systems" (now: "Intelligent Construction Site Systems") in June 2021.

The client was the consortium "ARGE U2 17–22," a joint venture consisting of STRABAG AG and PORR.

Components and features of the overall system

  • Central control system (NMS – Network Management System)
  • Personnel tracking and access management throughout the entire construction site area (both above and underground)
  • Communication system for the construction team based on Wi-Fi
  • Communication system for the Vienna Fire Department
  • Mobile radio system for GSM900
  • Emergency call phone
  • Alarm system
  • Video surveillance and storage (above and underground)
  • Wi-Fi coverage throughout the entire construction site area

The core of the system is the management software, which enables central control and visualization of all subsystems. All necessary applications are installed on reliable server systems. The remote units are connected via a fiber optic ring, ensuring a fast and secure network connection. Comprehensive data coverage is made possible through the use of a widespread Wi-Fi network.

In addition to the main construction site area at Matzleinsdorferplatz, 11 other construction sites, as well as the shaft and tunnel structures where the U2 line will operate after the completion of the construction work in 2026, have been integrated into the intelligent construction site system.

The equipment was carried out largely in parallel and began in the first phase with the setup of the central control unit, as well as the connection of the additional construction site areas to the central unit. Eight construction site areas were connected via 4G modems, and two via fiber optic cables. In addition, the components controlling access to the individual construction site areas, personnel tracking, and the emergency call system were installed.

In the second phase, the shaft structures were equipped and progressively expanded with personnel tracking and the Wi-Fi infrastructure as construction advanced. Additionally, the communication components for construction radio, fire department radio, and mobile radio were installed.

With the start of tunneling work, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) was also equipped with our systems. This ensured not only the tracking of personnel but also smooth communication on the TBM. After tunneling operations began, new sections of the construction site were gradually integrated into the overall system in line with construction progress, allowing the number and position of the tunneling crews working underground to be displayed at all times. This guarantees maximum safety for both people and machinery at any time.
