Marieholm Tunnel Gothenburg, E&M Equipment
Züblin Scandinavia AB, a Swedish subsidiary of STRABAG SE, has been awarded the contract to build the Marieholm Tunnel, an immersed tunnel under the Göta River in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, as consortium leader of a joint venture. Subsequently, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions was commissioned with the electromechanical equipment for the tunnel.
Since December 2020, the Marieholm Tunnel has connected the E45 Marieholm highway with the E6 Tingstad intersection in the district of Hisingen. The tunnel has a total length of around 500 meters, 300 meters of which run directly under the water. For this exciting project, three tunnel elements, each 100 meters long, were completed on site in a dry dock and lowered into the excavated riverbed at the final location. The tunnel sections adjacent to both sides of the immersed tunnel were constructed using the cut-and-cover method in deep excavation pits.
The construction of the Marieholm Tunnel significantly improved accessibility to the port of Gothenburg, Norra Älvstranden, and the western Hisingen industry. In addition, the existing Tingstad Tunnel, which had long since exceeded its capacity limit with over 120,000 vehicles a day, was relieved.
As part of the project, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions installed around 1,800 tunnel lights and more than 300 electrically controlled traffic signs in the tunnel and the adjacent open field, and laid 278 km of power cables – to name just a few examples.
