SISS supplies CCTV Systems for Indian Regional Rail Operator
In 2021, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions was commissioned by Bombardier Transportation India (now: ALSTOM India) to supply Mobile Video Systems for 210 carriages of the regional rail operator National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).
The CCTV system in the trains comprises a variety of cameras strategically installed in different areas, including cabin, passenger compartment, front and rear views, as well as special surveillance cameras for track and pantograph areas.
The architecture of the video system is flexible and can be scaled according to the project requirements. Three different train configurations have been implemented for this project, allowing, for example, a different number of cameras to be controlled as required.
The on-board part of the system consists of certified components that have been integrated into the vehicle's infrastructure and can capture and record all required areas. A vehicle unit consists of two video recorders that record all relevant video data from the installed cameras in redundancy mode.
As with the project for the metro in Agra and Kanpur, solid-state drives – SSD's for short – are used for storage, which overwrite the oldest data with the newest in a continuous process on a FIFO basis. The available capacity can be increased by adding more SSD's without the need to physically adapt the storage media or replace the recorder itself.
The off-train part of the system comprises the software for transmitting and evaluating the live stream or recorded video data. On the land side, both software and hardware components are used to evaluate the stored video data, which can be either systematic or event-based.
By using state-of-the-art CCTV technology, the project is helping to significantly raise safety standards in rail transport in India. It supports staff monitoring, facilitates incident investigation and creates a safer environment for passengers and staff alike. Overall, this solution strengthens confidence in public transportation in the region and promotes safer rail operations.
