Tunnel Radio System for the A44 Spitzenberg and Trimberg Tunnels

After completion of the construction works on the two tunnels Spitzenberg (600 m) and Trimberg (585 m) in 2020, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions was commissioned to equip the four tunnel tubes with state‑of‑the‑art radio communication technology.

The objective was to ensure reliable radio coverage within the tunnels. For this purpose, the digital radio system for authorities and emergency services (dBOS) was installed, which is used by the police, fire brigade, and rescue services. In addition, radio broadcasting (FM and DAB+), the digital radio system of the motorway maintenance authority, and a backup radio system were implemented to provide communication in case the primary radio network fails.

Of particular importance is the ability of the police and emergency services to communicate continuously and reliably throughout both tunnels. This applies to the entire length of the tunnels and is ensured using the standard digital radio devices (TETRA) employed by the emergency services.
