The Bad Bergzabern bypass is a key infrastructure project for the local municipality of Rhineland-Palatinate and the surrounding communities. We are pleased to announce that STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions has been awarded the contract for the technical outfitting of the tunnel – the centerpiece of the project – which spans 1.44 km. The contract is valued at nearly € 25 million.
The B427 main road through Bad Bergzabern has reached its capacity limits due to increasing traffic volumes. To sustainably improve traffic flow and the environmental situation – and to secure the status of the town as a climatic health resort - the groundbreaking ceremony for the new southwestern bypass (approx. 2.5 km long) took place back in March 2017.
Since June 2025, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions is working on the electromechanical installations of the tunnel. The works include, among others, the power and emergency power supply, all installations within the tunnel, the escape passage and the operational buildings, as well as the entire automation, traffic, and measurement systems (e.g. traffic data collection, CO₂ monitoring, visibility, air velocity and direction, ventilation).
To ensure tunnel safety, a fire detection and video surveillance system will be installed. Emergency call, radio, and telephone systems will guarantee reliable communication both within the tunnel and with the outside world at all times. In addition, the control technology and the connection to the tunnel monitoring centers are crucial for safe tunnel operation.
With the technical equipment of the tunnel, STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions is making a significant contribution to road safety and to the sustainable improvement of mobility in and around Bad Bergzabern. Completion of the project, and thus the opening to traffic, is scheduled for 2027.
